Copper sulphate (CuSO4), is an inorganic compound widely used in industrial production and scientific research. The compound commonly exists as copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4-5H2O) as blue crystals, commonly known as blue alum . The substance loses its water of crystallisation under dry conditions and changes to anhydrous copper sulphate in the form of a white or off-white powder. Copper sulphate is usually prepared by the reaction of concentrated sulphuric acid and copper, or it can be obtained by treating a mixture of copper-bearing ores with sulphuric acid.
Industrially, copper sulfate is an important chemical raw material widely used in pesticides, plant and animal growth regulators, feed additives, and as a medium in the electroplating and dyeing industries.
