Formic acid is an organic substance with the chemical formula HCOOH, molecular weight 46.03, commonly known as anthranilic acid, and is the simplest carboxylic acid. It is a colourless liquid with a pungent odour. Formic acid is a weak electrolyte, but it is weakly acidic and corrosive in its aqueous solution, irritating and blistering the skin. It is usually found in the secretions of wasps, certain ants and caterpillars. It is an organic chemical material and is also used as a disinfectant and preservative.

Storage method
